Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) equips and supports the UK’s Armed Forces for current and future operations. Employing approximately 18,000 people with a budget of some £14 billion, DE&S has headquarters in Bristol with other sites across the UK and overseas.
DE&S acquires and supports equipment and services including ships, aircraft, vehicles and weapons, information systems and satellite communications. As well as continuing to supply general requirements, food, clothing, medical and temporary accommodation, DE&S is also responsible for HM Naval Bases, the joint support chain and British Forces Post Office.

Dstl’s purpose is to maximise the impact of science and technology on UK defence and security – across government. We work with the best people with the best ideas around the world – from very small companies to world-class universities, huge defence companies … even other nations.
Together we develop battle-winning technologies, based on deep and widespread research, supporting UK military operations now and in the future. We also work in niche areas which are sensitive, operationally critical or international in nature and must therefore be done within government.
Dstl starts from the presumption that work should be conducted by external suppliers (industry, universities and other research organisations) unless there is a clear reason for it to be done or led by Dstl. At present around 60 per cent of the approximately £400 million MOD non-nuclear defence research programme, managed through Dstl, goes to suppliers to deliver.
Dstl works mainly for the Ministry of Defence, but because of its expertise and facilities, particularly in the wider area of UK defence and security, Dstl works across government for more than 40 departments and agencies.
